*** watch Danielson – A Family Movie now!! ***
One of Daniel Johnston’s best movies. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no time like the present! If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!
Danielson: A Family Movie, is a feature-length documentary that sheds light on the story of this enigmatic indie-rock band. When The Danielson Famile released their first album on Tooth and Nail Records in the nineties, listeners wondered if their heavy Christian message was sincere. Portrayed in the media as an outsider band on par with the beloved Shaggs, Danielson Famile played a new type of homespun rock, seemingly based on The Pixies with bandleader Daniel Smith’s screechy, Black Francis vocals and quirky compositional contributions by his siblings Rachel, Megan, David, and Andrew Smith. Dressing in nurse uniforms to spread the message of Jesus’ healing, the Danielson Famile toured nightclub and festival circuits despite their strict adherence to Christian morality. Qustions about the relevance of their Christianity to their sound have polarized fans and haters, as shown by ample film footage of audience interviewing post-Danielson Famile gigs. This conundrum, however, is precisely what excites fans, as the band splits and reunites to accommodate family scheduling and added crew such as Chris Palladino and Sufjan Stevens. A Family Movie covers much of the Danielson history with sweet animation by Chirs Palladino and others, dispersed through vintage concert clips and home-video footage of the kids practicing music and living life. A narrative format in which each sibling reads their written letter to fellow family members reinforces the closeness of this tight-knit clan. As the film progresses, pacing slows as Daniel explains the beginnings of his solo career, and his story digresses into Sufjan Steven’s, which is frustrating. But to see a film about a family so committed to music and its potential to heal and spread love is uniquly awe-inspiring. –Trinie Dalton

*** Room Service/At the Circus playing NOW!! ***

This is a great movie with Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller
Basically it’s about:
The Marx Bros. try to find a backer for a Broadway play, then scramble to find a backer for a circus. So we put them backer to backer in this hilarious twofer. In Side A’s Room Service (with Lucille Ball and Ann Miller), a cash-strapped theatrical troupe reasons no one would bounce a sick man from a hotel room. And that leads to a diagnosis of crazy comedy full of feigned illness, fake suicides, a bogus physician and more Marxist doctorin.’ The 3-ring circus that is Groucho, Chico and Harpo provide big-top bedlam At the Circus (Side B). Groucho and Chico work a badge skit, Chico and Harpo scour a strongman’s bedroom for evidence, Groucho extols Lydia the Tattooed Lady and logic, like the orchestra at the film’s conclusion, is cut adrift and out to sea. You can learn a lot from Lydia. And laugh a lot with these classic romps.
While I’ve watched Room Service/At the Circus a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while – why not watch it now? Of course you can watch it later – for free – check the image above to see how. It’s the best way I’ve found

This clunky road movie about three drag qUns (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguziamo) who get stranded in a sleepy Nebraska town on their way to a beauty contest, is too uplifting for its own good. Released during drag’s mid-’90s heyday when RuPaul and the Wigstock documentary were all the rage, To Wong Foo aimed straight for the mainstream with its inoffensive camp and “can’t we all get along” moralism. While gay-activist groups howled about straights getting the lead roles in To Wong Foo, in the end the filmmakers really couldn’t have done better than this trio of actors. John Leguziamo provides real sass and bite as a Latino (or should we saw Latina?) drag qUn, and Wesley Snipes is surprisingly fierce as the imposing leader of the pack. Saddled with a cloying Southern accent and off-kilter wig, Patrick Swayze barely holds his own with his costars, though. To Wong Foo is best viewed as a cultural artifact of a time when it seemed as though drag could rule all tomorrow’s parties. –Ethan Brown
OK. If you like Wesley Snipes, you’re going to love this movie. I’ve been a fan for a long time, and I’ve seen To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar a lot. I never get tired of it. Have you seen it? If you click the image above you can learn how you can watch it now, or any time.
